Friends Group

The Friends of Parkwood Springs is a voluntary group that was formed in 2010 with one goal - to make Parkwood Springs a better place for us all.

We aim to:
- help protect and conserve the wildlife and nature on Parkwood Springs.

- Improve Parkwood Springs for local residents.
- Encourage more people to visit Parkwood Springs.

We really want Parkwood Springs to be “our country park in the city”.

About the Friends Group committee

At our online AGM, held on 9th June 2021 on Zoom, we elected a new committee. The photo shows us at our first meeting back in-person due to the COVID-19 restrictions on the helipad near the Shirecliffe Road entrance. We had a great meeting!

Committee members and roles
Louise Bull and Neill Schofield - Joint Chairs
Peter Bull - Treasurer
Ray Swift, Bernadette O’Callaghan, Carol Schofield, Catherine Gaze, Penny Philcox, Robert Almond, Seth Kirby and Nick Pearce (since the meeting we have co-opted Nick on to the committee).

Below are photos and a short profile of some of our committee members. More committee members to be featured soon!

I discovered Parkwood Springs on a Dawn Chorus Walk. We walked through the woods, listening to the birdsong. When we emerged at the Beacons Viewpoint we were amazed to see the city set out before us in the early morning light. I realised then that Parkwood Springs is a very special place. I joined the Friends Group, came along to Conservation Sessions, helped with the Forest Garden and got involved with the Lantern Procession. Several years down the line, I still love Parkwood Springs the most in the early morning.

Parkwood Springs is on my doorstep, and has been an important part of my life for some while now. I was involved in setting up the Friends of Parkwood Springs over 10 years ago. However, we’ve recently found out that my roots go back quite a lot further, as my grandfather was born in the old Parkwood Springs village, down at the bottom of the hill. It’s been great to see the steady improvements to the site. Sometimes it’s a bit frustrating when things don’t move forward smoothly, but I love to see more people finding out about Parkwood Springs and enjoying it. It has got such potential for the local community and the city as a whole.

Peter Bull
I am a retired Council traffic engineer. I've been looking at Parkwood Springs from the other side of the valley for about 40 years, and got involved with the Friends Group following a Dawn Chorus walk a few years ago. My main interests are the wildlife and the local history, and I am keen to scrutinise development proposals to make sure they enhance Parkwood Springs for the benefit of local people.

Seth Kirby
Seth is an academic with professional experience in marketing and events. My interests are varied and include watching sports, visiting heritage sites, running (and exploring) the natural habitat of Parkwood Springs. I use my marketing expertise to support the Friends of Parkwood Springs communications activities for the benefit of the Friends Group and its members.
